Aesthetic Musings: fame

I'm not sure if I agree with you. Regardless of whether you're all about the DIY ethic, or you're a pop-star with a multi-million dollar contract, the reason you do what you do is so that other people may hear it. Regardless of how much less romantic music becomes, no one really gets "discovered"; they work at showcasing their music. I don't think its pretentious- I think its about confidence. The harder you push your art, regardless of what it is, should correlate with how good you think it is/how much better it is than other things. If you're good at it, you should be able to (humbly) say so.

I guess the whole problem I have is that there is no objective way to determine what is better art, nor should there be. Everyone has their own interpretation, thus, every artist thinks what they do is great.

I also think its a pretty bold thing to claim that the reason artists create art is so that other people may consume it. It may or may not be true, but regardless, why do artists feel compelled to share/promote their creations?

I think in a lot of cases, the answer is vanity, and ambition. This can't be true in all cases, but certainly is true in some. I'm sure different people at different times have different influences, and that certainly complicates things.

I'm just curious, what other motivation is out there for sharing/promoting? I can't really think of any right now, but it feels like there's a lot more out there.
